Hallig Hooge – "Crown of the Holms"

Hallig Hooge is easily accessible from the mainland port of Schlüttsiel – crossing time amounts to no more than one hour. Having arrived on Hooge you may choose between different modes of transportation: You may either choose to walk, to rent a bike directly at the holm's ferry port – or you may treat yourself to an unforgettable excursion by horse-drawn carriage!

Hallig Hooge's sights include, among others, the Königspesel Museum and the Halligmuseum. The Königspesel displays numerous documents of Hooge's history, including ancient furniture, paintings, and equipment used in seafaring and fishing. The Halligmuseum gives a fascinating insight of local history, culture and day-to-day life of Hooge. Visitors should neither miss to visit Hooge Church. Dating from 17th century, this church was built on the ruins of previous church buildings destroyed during heavy storm tides. Hallig Hooge's church is richly decorated. As characteristic feature, it is equipped with sand flooring. Initially, this flooring was chosen in order to ensure a rapid water drain-off after flooding.

Another must to be visited is the information centre of Schutzstation Wattenmeer on Hanswarft. Here, you may obtain vast information about the Schleswig-Holstein Tideland National Park and meet some of its typical animals displayed in aquariums. Moreover, you should not miss to visit the Storm Tide Cinema – its 15-minutes film gives you a breathtaking impression of storm tides at the German North Sea Coast.
