Amrum ranks among Germany's most popular seaside resorts and records numerous regular visitors returning year after year. The island is perfectly suited for everybody who is looking for a relaxing break from routines and hectic day-to-day life.
Amrum Island has an overall size of approximately 20 square kilometres and counts roughly 2,300 citizens. It is located south of Sylt Island and west of Föhr Island. Less densely populated than its neighbour islands, Amrum has succeeded to preserve its authentic appearance. Visitors are immediately greeted by the richness and beauty of its landscape as well as by the private, inviting flair of the island villages. Amrum Island is divided into to parts: In its western half, a huge dune area spreads over the entire islands. This protected area opens up to an immense, sandy beach which constitutes a perfect playground for families. You may take a sunbath and enjoy the big views whilst your children play on the beach and enjoy themselves. Amrum's villages are located on the island's eastern side. Norddorf, Süddorf, Steenodde, Nebel and Wittdün are all worth a visit. Wittdün is Amrum Island's capital and ferry port with frequent departures to the mainland ports of Dagebüll and Schlüttsiel.
Amrum lacks the "chichi flair" of some other German seaside resorts. Instead, it boasts an unspoiled flair, rich nature, tradition and an own identity. "Öömrang", the local Friesian dialect, is a document of Amrum's identity and still used by about one third of the island's citizens. Traditional costumes, richly decorated with silver jewellery, are another part of local life.
Spending their holiday on Amrum Island, visitors may experience Friesian hospitality and enjoy themselves in a relaxing, casual atmosphere. Families are particularly welcome!
