W.D.R. - island services

Established back in 1885, Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei Föhr-Amrum GmbH ('The Föhr-Amrum Steamship Company', W.D.R.) is among Germany's leading domestic and island ferry service operators, linking the islands of Föhr and Amrum as well as the Halligen (holms) of Hooge and Langeness to the Schleswig-Holstein mainland. Five ferries are operating on two lines: Dagebüll – Wyk/Föhr – Wittdün/Amrum as well as Schlüttsiel – Hooge – Langeness – Wittdün/Amrum. Ashore, W.D.R. operates public transport on Föhr and Amrum Islands with a fleet of eight busses. All services are provided without public subsidies. Employing a staff of approximately 160, W.D.R. is a private-sector company controlled by some 315 shareholders, including another German ferry operator – AG Reederei Norden-Frisia – as the largest single shareholder.

On the Föhr-Amrum-Line, W.D.R. deploys – in addition to a 1995-built conventional ferry used mainly for replacement and back-up services – a fleet of three latest double-end RoPax ferries tailormade for shallow water operations. The M/V UTHLANDE, SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN and NORDERAUE have been purposely designed by W.D.R. in cooperation with a renowned naval architect, and entered into service between June 2010 and May 2018. All three ships meet high demands not at least with regard to sustainability: They have been constructed in accordance with the strict RAL-UZ 141 standards for the renowned German "Blauer Engel" ecolabel, and the 2011-built SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN also holds a second ecolabel according to RAL-UZ 110 standards for sustainable ship operation. She is the first ferry worldwide to have received both ecolabels. W.D.R. holds ISO certifications for its Quality Management System (ISO 9001) and its Environmental Management System (ISO 14001).
